Cardiomyopathy

Disease CardiologyCardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Cardiomyopathy refers to abnormalities of the structure or function of the heart muscle. There are 3 major types of cardiomyopathy: dilated congestive, hypertrophic and restrictive.

Cardiomyopathy
What is cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is any disease of the heart muscle in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood effectively.

Cardiomyopathy symptoms
Cardiomyopathy is a very serious heart disease. It is classified as a secondary disease if it is associated with other diseases affecting the organs.

Cardiomyopathy in people over 65
There is an increased incidence of ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy in elderly patients, (10% of people who develop dilated cardiomyopathy are likely to be over 65 years).

Cardiomyopathy treatments
The overall goals of treatment for cardiomyopathy are to manage the symptoms, prevent progression of the illness, and reduce the risk of complications. Treatment may vary depending on the type of cardiomyopathy.

Cardiomyopathy Definition
Definition
Cardiomyopathy refers to heart muscle disease. The damaged heart does not effectively pump blood. The disease usually progresses to the point where patients develop life-threatening heart failure .

What is Cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is disease affecting the heart muscle. Most cardiomyopathies affect the left ventricle of the heart which is the largest chamber responsible for pumping blood throughout the entire body.

What is Cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that either causes a weakening of the heart muscle or a change in its structure.

Cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscle or a change in heart muscle structure. It is often associated with inadequate heart pumping or other heart function problems.

Cardiomyopathy can be caused by viral infections, heart attacks, alcoholism, long-term, severe high blood pressure, nutritional deficiences (particularly selenium, thiamine, and L-carnitine), systemic lupus erythematosus, celiac disease, ...

Cardiomyopathy is a type of heart disease in which the heart muscle is abnormally enlarged, thickened and/or stiffened. As a result, the heart muscle's ability to pump blood is usually impaired.

What is cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy may be result of:
Viruses - such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Amyloidosis - a malignant disease where a stretchy, thick (amyloid) protein, may deposit on your heart or other organs, and cause cardiomyopathy
Infection ...

Cardiomyopathy occurs in three major types:
Dilated cardiomyopathy. This type involves enlargement of one or more of your heart's chambers.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This form involves thickening of your heart's muscle.

Cardiomyopathy, which literally means "heart muscle disease," is the deterioration of the function of the myocardium for any reason. People with cardiomyopathy are often at risk of arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death or both.

How Is Cardiomyopathy Treated?
People who have cardiomyopathy but no signs or symptoms may not need treatment. Sometimes, dilated cardiomyopathy that comes on suddenly may even go away on its own.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition of the heart muscle. Some forms of dilated cardiomyopathy run in families. The heart dilates (becomes enlarged) and pumps blood less well.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common form, causing enlargement of both of the heart's ventricles, or pumping chambers. The enlargement weakens the heart and may cause eventual heart failure.

Cardiomyopathy may also be termed primary or secondary. Primary cardiomyopathy refers to cases where cardiomyopathy occurs by itself or for unknown reasons (idiopathic).

Cardiomyopathy is a disease that weakens and enlarges your heart muscle. There are three main types of cardiomyopathy - dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive - all of which affect your heart muscle.

Cardiomyopathy - restrictive; Infiltrative cardiomyopathy
Causes
In restrictive cardiomyopathy, the heart is of normal size or only slightly enlarged.

Cardiomyopathy - alcoholic
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Drinking alcohol in large quantities has a toxic effect on heart muscle cells. Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is a form of dilated cardiomyopathy caused by habitual alcohol abuse.

Cardiomyopathy - alcoholic
Definition of Alcoholic cardiomyopathy:
Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is a disorder in which drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time weakens the heart muscle so that it cannot pump blood efficiently.

Cardiomyopathy is a complex disease process that can affect the heart of a person of any age.

Cardiomyopathy is usually discovered when the doctor is examining and testing you for the cause of heart failure.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is myocardial dysfunction causing heart failure in which ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction predominate. Symptoms include dyspnea, fatigue, and peripheral edema.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a rare disorder, is diagnosed and treated at Mayo Clinic by experienced cardiovascular specialists and cardiac (heart) surgeons.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is often asymmetrical, meaning one part of the heart is thicker than the other parts. The condition is usually passed down through families (inherited).

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A genetic disorder of the heart characterized by increased thickness (hypertrophy) of the wall of the left ventricle, the largest of the four chambers of the heart. The disease can present at any time in life.
