Chalazions Definition
Definition
A chalazion is a hard bump that forms on the eyelid.

Chalazion - Cause
The MedicineNet physician editors ask:
How was your chalazion treated?

Chalazions are usually caused by a buildup of secretions in the meibomian gland that form a cyst. Chalazions occur most often in adults. They may be linked with other skin conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, blepharitis, and rosacea.

Chalazion: A chalazion is noninfectious obstruction of a meibomian gland causing extravasation of irritating lipid material in the eyelid soft tissues with focal secondary granulomatous inflammation.

A chalazion develops in the glands that produce the fluid that lubricates the eye. These are called Meibomian glands. The eyelid has approximately 100 of these glands, which are located near the eyelashes.

A chalazion is an inflammation of the glands which surround the eye. Typically a chalazion takes the form of a small lump in the upper or lower eyelid, often near the edge.

A chalazion, like a sty, is a swelling within the eyelid caused by inflammation of an oil gland. A chalazion differs from a sty in that it does not contain an active bacterial infection. A chalazion is sometimes the aftereffect of a sty.

Chalazion
Causes
A chalazion can form when the duct leading from the meibomian gland to the eyelid becomes blocked. This gland produces an oily substance that lubricates the margins of the eyelid and the front of the eye.

Chalazion: A cyst of the little glands in the eyelids that make a lubricant which they discharge through tiny openings in the edges of the lids. The lubricant is a fatty substance called sebum characteristic of sebaceous glands.

The normal function of the eyelid is to protect the eye and to produce tear film, which moistens the outer eye surface, helps remove particles of debris, and provides nourishment to the cornea.

CHALAZION
SYMPTOMS"This appears to be a sty on the eyelid, but it is not. After several days, the swelling and pain disappears, but a slow growing pea-sized nodule on the lid remains.

A chalazion (say: keh-lay-zee-on) is a firm (but less painful) bump in the middle of the eyelid. It is caused by an inflamed, blocked gland. A chalazion may also cause blurry vision.

A chalazion is an inflammation of an oil gland in the underside of the eyelid. It appears as a small bump beneath the eyelid, accompanied by redness and mild discomfort. Like styes, chalazions can be treated with application of warm, moist compresses.

A chalazion forms a firm lump or cyst under the skin of the eyelid.
Chalazia grow more slowly than styes. If a chalazion gets large enough, it may interfere with vision.
The inflammation and swelling may spread to the area surrounding the eye.

Styes and chalazions can be treated by applying warm compresses. Apply for 10 minutes. Do this four times a day.
Do NOT attempt to squeeze a stye or any other type of eyelid bump. Let it drain on its own.

Stye (Hordeolum and Chalazion)
A stye (hordeolum) is a local, acutely inflamed growth (swelling, lesion) of the eyelid. They can occur at the lid margin or farther up the lid on either the inner (tarsal) side or the outer (skin) side of the lid.

A chalazion is a lump caused by a blocked gland on the inside of your eyelid. It can put pressure on your cornea forcing it to change shape, which causes astigmatism, although this is rare.

Some conditions exist that are similar to a sty, but require different treatment. For instance a chalazion - a blockage in one of the small glands in the eyelid - can produce a swelling similar to that of a sty.
