The chancre generally appears on the genital area but can also form on the lips, tongue or rectum if these areas have been exposed to a syphilis chancre on another person during oral or anal sexual contact.
The chancre:
appears on the genitals, vagina, anus, in the rectum or on the lips and in the mouth, wherever syphilis entered the body;
is painless; and
depending on location, may go unnoticed.
SYMPTOMS"A chancre appears on the skin, either on the mouth, in the mouth, or on the genitals. It is also called a hard chancre or Hunterian sore.
A diagnosis of the chancre (primary stage of Infection) can be made by examining the ulcer secretions under a microscope. A special microscope (dark field), however, must be used to see the distinctive corkscrew-shaped Treponema organisms.
The primary lesion (called a chancre) develops at the site of entry of bacteria on the penis, cervix, vagina wall or anus. This starts as a lump and later bcomes an ulcer.
Painless sores ( chancres) form at the site of infection about 2-3 weeks after you are first infected. You may not notice the sores or any symptoms, particularly if the sores are inside the rectum or cervix.

The first symptom of primary syphilis is a sore called a chancre , which can appear within 10 days to 3 months after exposure.
Primary Syphilis The first symptom of primary syphilis is an ulcer called a chancre ("shan-ker"). The chancre can appear within 10 days to 3 months after exposure, but it generally appears within 2 to 6 weeks.
Secondary stage syphilis occurs after the chancre has healed. It is characterized by a rash that does not itch. The rash may be present on the palms, soles of the feet, and is red to reddish brown in color.
After an incubation period ranging from 10-90 days, the patient develops a chancre, which is a small blister-like sore about 0.5 in (13 mm) in size. Most chancres are on the genitals, but may also develop in or on the mouth or on the breasts.
A painless red sore called a chancre can appear on the genitals, at the area where the infection occurred. Enlarged lymph nodes (swollen glands) also might be present in the area.
The diagnosis rests upon demonstrating trypanosomes by microscopic examination of chancre fluid, lymph node aspirates, blood, bone marrow, or, in the late stages of infection, cerebrospinal fluid.

About a third of untreated individuals with primary syphilis will develop secondary syphilis. This usually occurs at about 2 to 8 weeks after the appearance of the original painless sore (chancre). Sometimes, the sore may still be present.
