Chondromalacia patella is a softening or wearing away of the articular cartilage on the undersurface of the kneecap (patella). Articular cartilage is a smooth substance that covers the femur (thighbone), the tibia (shinbone), and the patella.

Chondromalacia patella that occurs in adolescents and young adults is thought to be related to overuse, injury, or too much force on the knee. It is more common in females. Many young people have a slight problem with the position of the kneecap.

Chondromalacia patellae is a softening of the cartilage in the posterior part of the patella. The posterior patella articulates (forms a joint) with the femur (thighbone).
