Chondromalacia Patellae
Definition
Chondromalacia patellae refers to the progressive erosion of the articular cartilage of the knee joint, that is the cartilage underlying the kneecap (patella) that articulates with the knee joint.

Chondromalacia patellae is a painful disorder of the knee in which the cartilage directly behind the kneecap (also known as the patella) becomes soft and damaged. Cartilage is a type of tissue that helps form many important body structures.

Runner's knee is a condition causing pain in the front of the knee. It is often due to excess wear on the underside of the kneecap. It is also called chondromalacia patellae, or CMP.
