Chordoma is a rare slow-growing malignant neoplasm thought to arise from cellular remnants of the notochord.
Chordoma is a rare cancerous (malignant) primary bone tumor that occurs along the spine, most often in the base of the spine (sacrum) or in the base of the skull. Chordomas can occur at any age, but they usually occur in adults.
Chordomas develop in a structure called the notochord. The notochord forms the early spine in the beginning stages of fetal development. Most of the notochord is replaced by the spine during the first six months of development.

Chordoma is a type of bone cancer that typically starts in the lower spinal cord. Rare, soft-tissue sarcomas that begin in the bone include malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) and fibrosarcoma. MFH makes up less than 1% of primary bone tumors.
