Chronic Cholecystitis
Chronic gallbladder disease (chronic cholecystitis) occurs because of the prolonged presence of gallstones and low-grade inflammation. Scarring causes the gallbladder to become stiff and thick.

Chronic cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder that lasts a long time. It is caused by repeat attacks of acute cholecystitis. Damage to the walls of the gallbladder leads to a thickened, scarred gallbladder.

In chronic cholecystitis or following a significant attack of acute cholecystitis, definitive treatment to may be indicated when the acute phase has settled. The method of choice is removal of the gallbladder with its contents (cholecystectomy).

Symptoms of Chronic Cholecystitis or Dysfunctional Gallbladders
Chronic gallbladder disease (chronic cholecystitis) is marked by gallstones and low-grade inflammation. In such cases the gallbladder may become scarred and stiff.

In rare cases of chronic cholecystitis, you may also receive medicine that dissolves gallstones over a period of time.

Repeated mild episodes of acute cholecystitis may result in chronic cholecystitis, which may be characterized by thickening and shrinking of the gallbladder walls and a resulting inability to store bile.

Acute cholecystitis causes sudden and severe inflammation of the gallbladder; whereas chronic cholecystitis causes gradual inflammation of the gallbladder.

" The calcification results from chronic cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation) usually associated with gallstones. Patients with a calcified gallbladder have an increased risk of cancer of the gallbladder.
