What is chronic hepatitis B?
You have chronic hepatitis B when the virus is active in your body for more than 6 months. The virus can damage liver cells and cause your liver to become swollen and tender.

Chronic Hepatitis
Chronic hepatitis, either hepatitis B or hepatitis C, is the second leading cause of cirrhosis. Chronic hepatitis C is the more dangerous form and accounts for one-third of all cirrhosis cases.

Chronic hepatitis C
When the initial infection lasts for more than six months, it is called chronic hepatitis C. Symptoms of chronic hepatitis C include: ...

Chronic hepatitis B and D. The hepatitis B virus is probably the most common cause of cirrhosis worldwide, but it is less common in the United States and the Western world.

Chronic hepatitis B and D. The hepatitis B virus is a liver infection that is spread by contact with an infected person's blood, semen, or other body fluid.

Chronic hepatitis
Many patients have no symptoms.
Tiredness, an increased need for sleep, aching muscles and joints.
Periodic light pressure or pain below the right ribs - enlarged liver.
Jaundice is a very late symptom of chronic hepatitis.

Chronic hepatitis
An ongoing infection of the liver that can lead to cirrhosis, a hardening of the liver that causes liver tissue to scar and stop working.
...

Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The serious liver infection hepatitis C ranks second only to alcoholism as a cause of cirrhosis.

What is Chronic Hepatitis? What are its consequences?
Chronic viral hepatitis refers to ongoing inflammation and/or abnormalities of liver enzymes which last more than six months.

What is chronic hepatitis?
Acute hepatitis is quite common in the US.
Causes:
Common causes of acute hepatitis may include: ...

Chronic hepatitis B occurs when the virus lasts for longer than six months. If the virus gets to the chronic stage it may never completely go away.

Chronic hepatitis C causes inflammation of the liver that eventually can lead to cirrhosis. One out of every five people with chronic hepatitis C develops cirrhosis after 20 years.

Chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) are recognized as the major factors worldwide that increase the risk of HCC, with risk being greater in the presence of coinfection.

Chronic hepatitis may be suspected on the basis of blood tests, but the diagnosis requires a liver biopsy that demonstrates a particular type and location of inflammation in the liver.

Chronic hepatitis C can cause swelling and tiny scars to form in your liver. When this happens, your liver doesn't work well.

Chronic hepatitis B can be treated with antiviral drugs.

chronic hepatitis B
Hepatitis B infection may be either acute — lasting less than six months — or chronic, lasting six months or longer.

If you have chronic hepatitis B, you may be treated with medication. This will help to reduce the activity of the virus. It can also prevent liver failure.
Medications include: ...

People with chronic hepatitis C infection should be seen by a hospital liver specialist who may recommend antiviral drug treatments either as single drug therapy or as combination therapy.

If you develop chronic hepatitis B, you may not have symptoms and you could pass on the virus without realising you are infected.
If you do have symptoms, these may come and go. You could develop serious liver damage (see Symptoms).

Anyone who has chronic hepatitis B is also susceptible to infection with another strain of viral hepatitis known as hepatitis D (formerly called delta virus). Hepatitis D virus can only infect cells if the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is present.

Some people with chronic Hepatitis C never develop liver damage.
When individuals develop liver damage, it typically does so very slowly for many years or decades.

Two drugs have been approved for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. These are interferon alpha‑2b and lamivudine. These drugs should not be given together.

A natural body protein, interferon alpha, now can be made in large amounts by genetic engineering, and improves the outlook for many patients who have chronic hepatitis C. The protein can lessen the symptoms of infection and improve liver function.

Nine out of ten (90%) babies born to women with chronic hepatitis B will become chronic carriers if left untreated and may pass it on to others with whom they come in close contact.

Chronic hepatitis C affects approximately 3 million Americans and chronic hepatitis B accounts for persistent infection in more than 170 million people worldwide and is a major cause of liver cancer.

There is increasing evidence that certain medications can control chronic hepatitis B or C infection, and thereby reduce the inflammation they cause in the liver.

There are 2 main kinds of hepatitis, acute hepatitis (short-lived) and chronic hepatitis (lasting at least 6 months).

If left untreated, chronic hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis in about 15-20% of cases, as well as digestive tract bleeding, liver failure and liver cancer in 7 to 15% of patients.
