Chylous ascites - The presence of chyle in the peritoneal cavity as a result of anomalies, injuries, or obstruction of the thoracic duct.

Occasionally, patients with extensive abdominal or thoracic disease develop chylous ascites or pleural effusion because of lymphatic obstruction. Weight loss, fever, night sweats, and asthenia indicate disseminated disease.

cases, severe underactivity of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) may cause ascites. An accumulation of fluid from the lymph system can occur when the lymph circulation becomes blocked by a tumor, thereby creating an ascites called chylous ascites.

The appearance of chylous ascites and ascites from all other causes cannot be distinguished by Ultrasound: Sound waves with a higher frequency than can be heard by the human ear.
