The colon is the lower portion of the gastrointestinal tract and is about 5 feet long. A colon polyp is a growth inside the colon. Colon polyps can be small, often less than 1 cm.

Definition
Colon polyps are growths on the lining of the colon or rectum. The colon and the rectum are parts of the large intestine. It is all part of the digestive system.

Will colon polyps recur after they have been removed?
Polyps will not recur if they are completely removed. Once a person has an adenoma, the risk of recurrence of polyps is 30-40% at three years.

How are colon polyps treated?
Doctors can usually remove polyps during a colonoscopy-the procedure used to check for colon polyps. The polyps are then tested for cancer.

How are colon polyps diagnosed?
Most polyps are found during tests for colon cancer. Experts recommend routine colon cancer testing for everyone age 50 and older who has a normal risk for colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is prevented by removing precancerous colon polyps . It is cured if it is found early and is surgically removed before it spreads to other parts of the body.

Most, if not all, of these cancers develop from colon polyps. Removal of these precancerous polyps can prevent colon cancer. Colon polyps and early colon cancers cause no signs or symptoms.

Colon Polyps: Certain types of polyps, notably villous adenomas have the potential to become malignant. Patients who have previously had a polyp in the large bowel should undergo regular colonoscopy (ask your doctor how often).
