Common Bile Duct Stones (Choledocholithiasis)
Stones lodged in the common bile duct (choledocholithiasis) can block the flow of bile and cause jaundice.

Common bile duct stones pose a high risk for complications and nearly always warrant treatment. There are various options available. It is not clear yet which one is best.

This condition develops when there is long term (chronic) inflammation of the gallbladder. The wall of the gallbladder may be thickened and rigid. 5) Common bile duct stones (choledocholithiasis).

Most (85%) cases result from common bile duct stones, but bile duct obstruction can result from tumors or other conditions (see Table 1: Gallbladder and Bile Duct Disorders: Causes of Bile Duct Obstruction).

The predisposing factors for common bile duct stones are the same as for Gallstones.
