Communicating Hydrocephalus

Disease Communicable DiseasesCommunication disorder

Communicating hydrocephalus is a state in which CSF flows normally between the four ventricles, but is blocked after it exits them.

Communicating hydrocephalus occurs when there is no obstruction of flow of CSF through the ventricles to the subarachnoid space so hydrocephalus is the result of defective absoprtion of CSF and/or or increased production (rare).

Non-Communicating Hydrocephalus
Obstructive Hydrocephalus
Internal Hydrocephalus
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Benign Hydrocephalus ...

Non-communicating hydrocephalus - the flow of CSF through the brain is blocked.
Communicating hydrocephalus - either too much CSF is produced, or it isn't reabsorbed back into the tissues as it should be, so volume increases.

The second one is a communicating hydrocephalus resulting in head enlargement, typically associated with achondroplasia.

Communicating hydrocephalus - hydrocephalus is the abnormal enlargement of the brain cavities (ventricles) caused by a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Complications include enlargement of the fluid-filled ventricles within the brain (chronic communicating hydrocephalus), seizures, shock, deafness, neurologic impairments, dehydration, pericardial effusion, hemolytic anemia, coma, and death.

Communicating hydrocephalus occurs when the flow of CSF is blocked after it exits the ventricles. This form is called communicating because the CSF can still flow between the ventricles, which remain open.

Communicating hydrocephalus may develop and cause dementia. Intracranial pressure may remain elevated and cause headache, vomiting, and decreased alertness for days or weeks.
