This procedure is performed to help treat compartment syndromes. A compartment is a three-dimensional anatomic space in the body that is surrounded by fascia or bone and contains arteries, nerves, and veins.

Society has approved 13 indications for the use of HBO: air or gas embolism; carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning; CO poisoning complicated by cyanide poisoning; clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene); crush injuries, compartment syndromes, ...

NIR may help diagnose acute compartment syndromes (eg, in trauma) or ischemia after free tissue transfer and may be helpful in postoperative monitoring of lower extremity vascular bypass grafts.

Diminished pulses require emergent relocation and splinting and possible angiography to document integrity of the vasculature. Compartment syndromes must be considered in the setting of extremity trauma.
