Spinal cord compression syndrome occurs when the tumour compresses the spinal cord or the nerve roots in the spinal canal. This causes pain and loss of function of the nerves (neurological deficit).

Patellofemoral compression syndrome results from excessive tension or compression of soft tissue structures; there may be exacerbating bony malalignment.

As of 2003, diagnostic imaging is being increasingly used to aid in the diagnosis of nerve entrapment and compression syndromes.

In nerve compression syndromes, conduction velocity is abnormally slow where the nerve is being compressed. By measuring conduction velocities over different segments of the nerve, it is possible to determine the site of compression.
