Korsakoff's amnesic syndrome - this includes a loss of short-term memory, an inability to acquire new information and ‘confabulation' (the person fills in gaps in their memory with fabrications that they believe to be true).
Sometimes they will fill in the gaps by making up stories (confabulation). They may begin to forget what they were doing mid-task or forget where they are, causing them to frequently feel lost in familiar surroundings.
However, long-term memory and overall intelligence usually remain intact. To fill in the gaps in recent memory, patients tend to make up information that fits with the situation. This is called confabulation.
Is there a loss of memory about events that occurred soon after a specific experience (retrograde amnesia)? Is there only a minimal loss of memory? Does the person make up stories to cover gaps in memory (confabulation)?
As memory becomes more and more impaired, Korsakoff's psychosis develops and the individual tends to make up facts and events in order to fill in memory gaps. This process is called confabulation.
