Cor pulmonale
Definition
Cor pulmonale is failure of the right side of the heart brought on by long-term high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle of the heart.

Definition ...

cor pulmonale
Cor pulmonale, also called pulmonary heart disease, occurs when the right ventricle of the heart becomes enlarged. If left untreated, the condition may lead to heart failure.

Cor pulmonale refers to an enlargement of the pumping chamber on the right side of the heart (right ventricle) that can develop secondary to diseases of the lungs.

Cor pulmonale -- also known as right heart failure. Since the lungs are damaged, it is difficult for the right side of the heart to pump blood through them. Over time, the right side of the heart becomes overworked and damaged.

Right-sided heart failure (cor pulmonale). In this condition, your heart's right ventricle becomes enlarged and has to pump harder than usual to move blood through narrowed or blocked pulmonary arteries.

Stroke
After acute chest syndrome, stroke is the most common killer of patients with sickle cell disease who are older than 3 years old.

This condition can lead to enlargement and failure of your heart's right ventricle (cor pulmonale). Your heart consists of four chambers - two upper chambers called atria and two lower chambers called ventricles.

An increase in the number of red blood cells (polycythemia) is possible, as is an enlarged left ventricle of the heart (cor pulmonale), and left ventricular failure.

Cor pulmonale. Cor pulmonale is failure of the right side of the heart. Ongoing high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle (the lower right chamber of the heart) cause this condition.

Over time complications such as pulmonary hypertension, cor pulmonale and respiratory failure set in.

Both CWP and mild complicated CWP are often unsymptomatic or only affect lung function slightly. Shortness of breath and pain may be felt. However, progression to PMF is marked by lung dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, and cor pulmonale.

caused by a narrowing of the small arteries of the lung. This narrowing makes it harder for the right side of the heart to circulate the blood to the lungs. Over time, the right side of the heart may become enlarged and een fail (cor pulmonale).

in which some of your airways are permanently blocked. COPD makes it harder for you to breathe. It causes strain on your heart. It increases the blood pressure in your lungs (pulmonary hypertension) and makes your heart get bigger (cor pulmonale).

This is known as cor pulmonale and can lead to heart failure if left untreated. Your heart can also become generally enlarged in sarcoidosis, known as cardiomyopathy.

As CWP progresses and becomes PMF, a cough and shortness of breath develop, along with sputum and moderate to severe airway obstruction. Quality of life decreases. Complications of CWP include cor pulmonale.
