Recently, corneal surgery procedures have become recognized as a possible treatment for astigmatism. Cuts in the cornea or the use of lasers or other surgical techniques on the cornea have been shown to reduce or get rid of astigmatism.

In refractive corneal surgery, controlled by computer to make precise pre-programmed shavings of eye tissue to produce a given optical correction.

After surgery, any remaining vision problems can usually be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses or special corneal surgery (an operation on the cornea, the clear outer part of the eye, just over the dark pupil).
