Under normal circumstances your body produces more cortisol in the morning than in the evening, giving you the energy that you need to begin your day.
Cortisol levels are controlled by adrenal glands. These levels decline to a certain extent naturally with age. Cortisol is a natural hormone that regulates both blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Cortisol does even more.
Cortisol levels in the bloodstream are measured before and after an injection of ACTH into the blood or muscle. A blood sample is taken from a vein on the forearm or hand. First, the skin over the vein is cleaned with an antiseptic.
Cortisol levels are normally regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland (figure 2). The hypothalamus sends corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) to the pituitary gland.
