Coughs Overview
A cough is an action your body takes to get rid of substances that are irritating to your air passages, which carry the air you breathe in from the nose and mouth to the lungs.

Cough With Wheezing:
When coughing is accompanied by a wheezing sound as your child exhales (breathes out), it is a sign that something may be partially blocking the lower airway.

Cough: Introduction
A cough is a defensive reflex of the body that functions to keep the airways clear of irritating or obstructing substances so that breathing and the intake of oxygen is effective.

Coughs - Topic Overview
Coughing is the body's way of removing foreign material or mucus from the lungs and upper airway passages or of reacting to an irritated airway. Coughs have distinctive traits you can learn to recognize.

Hiccough: A hiccough is an extraordinary type of breathing movement involving a sudden intake of air (inspiration) due to an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm accompanied by closure of the vocal apparatus (glottis) of the larynx.

Dry cough
A dry cough happens when the throat and upper airways become inflamed (swollen). It is non-productive, which means that phlegm (thick mucus) is not produced.

How can coughing be treated?
Coughing is a symptom, not a disease. It is the underlying cause of the cough that needs to be treated.

Cough
Related Category: Pathology
sudden, forceful expiration of air from the lungs caused by an involuntary contraction of the muscles controlling the process of breathing.

Coughs are often categorized based on two characteristics-whether or not they produce or expel mucus, and how long they last. A productive cough is one that produces or expels sputum (also known as mucus or phlegm).

Coughs can be dry or "productive," which means that you are bringing up sputum or phlegm when you cough. Coughs can be either acute (typically not lasting longer than 2 -3 weeks) or chronic (lasting longer than 4 weeks).

Cough suppressants may help if this condition is due to throat irritation from violent coughing. However, cough suppressants may lead to airways obstruction in some cases. Always check with your doctor before using them.

A cough that is accompanied with mucus or phlegm (sputum) is usually a sign that an infection has developed in the lungs.

Cough: Everyone is familiar with a cough that follows cold or flu, and indeed these are the most common causes.
