The vaccine against smallpox is made from vaccinia virus Its origin is uncertain, but it was probably derived from cowpox virus, variola virus, or a hybrid of the two. Experience has proven the effectiveness of live vaccinia-virus vaccine.
In 1788, the scientist Edward Jenner inoculated a healthy, 8-year-old boy with cowpox - a disease caused by a virus that closely resembles variola.
Jenner observed that milkmaids often got a mild disease called cowpox and that this seemed to make them immune to smallpox.
Rather than using pus or scabs from individuals infected with smallpox, he used pus from a similar, but less virulent pox disease called cowpox.
An eighteenth century doctor named Edward Jenner noted that farm labourers who contracted the mild disease cowpox were immune to smallpox.
Jenner first investigated this in 1775 and within five years he had satisfied himself that cowpox was usually caused by the same (or a similar) type of virus that caused human smallpox.
