In the stage of congestion fine crackling or crepitation is heard over the affected area; sometimes there is very little change from the natural breathing.

Soft crackling sounds (crepitations or rales) may be a sign that heart failure has caused fluid to build up in the lungs.
An examination of the abdomen. Using a stethoscope, the doctor will listen to blood flow in the abdomen.

Physical exam: The individual may present with edema, stiffness, and cracking, popping, or grinding sounds (crepitation) with joint motion. On examination, tenderness, deformity, and muscle spasm may be evident.

Pneumomediastinum may cause crepitation in the neck, due to associated subcutaneous emphysema, and a crackling sound may rarely be heard over the heart during systole (Hamman's sign).
