Definition
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected, sudden death of a child under age 1 in which an autopsy does not show an explainable cause of death.

 


Sudden infant death syndrome, also known as SIDS, is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age. No cause for the death can be found. Because many SIDS babies die in their cribs, this syndrome is often called crib death.

Also called crib death or cot death. Small for gestational age: a baby whose measurements (height, weight, etc) are below the norm for its gestational age. Can be a sign of a problem with the pregnancy or the baby.
