Cryoglobulins are abnormal proteins. This article describes the blood test used to check for them.

Cryoglobulins: These are proteins, called immunoglobulins, which congeal or gel at cold temperatures. These proteins are made by B-lymphocytes or their derivative cells, plasma cells.

Cryoglobulins are abnormal proteins in the blood. If you have cryoglobulinemia (kri-oh-glob-u-lih-NE-me-uh), these cryoglobulins clump together, causing the plasma to become thick like maple syrup and deposit clumps in blood vessels.

Cryoglobulins are antibodies. It is not yet known why they become solid at low temperatures. When they do thicken or become somewhat gel-like, they can block blood vessels throughout the body.

Cryoglobulins are abnormal blood proteins that, by definition, have the unusual properties of precipitating from the blood serum when it is chilled (hence the "cryo-") and redissolving upon rewarming.

Cryoglobulins in the blood (cryoglobulinemia) can cause conditions throughout the body.

Test results may alter management and preclude the need for biopsy.

Cryoglobulinemia - Cryoglobulins are a combination of the body's infection-fighting proteins (antibodies, immunoglobulins) and their target proteins (antigens).

CRYOGLOBULINEMIA: a condition in which cryoglobulins form in the blood. When the blood is cooled, the cryoglobulins clump together, causing the blood to thicken and restricting blood flow.

Cryoglobulin test -- may show presence of cryoglobulins
Liver function tests -- may be high
Rheumatoid factor -- positive in types II and III
Skin biopsy
Urinalysis -- may show blood in the urine if the kidneys are affected ...

Rheumatoid factors (RFs) are found in the blood of people with rheumatoid arthritis, as well as in people with Sjogren's. Substances known as cryoglobulins may be detected; these indicate risk of lymphoma.

Other tests can include immunoglobulins, prick testing, rheumatoid factor, cryoglobulins, serum complement, and skin biopsy. However, laboratory tests often do not provide answers beyond those obtained in the history (3).
