Histiocytoma is readily distinguished from other histiocytic disorders and cutaneous lymphoma with the aid of IHC. Our work has clearly shown that histiocytomas have the phenotype of epidermal Langerhans cells.

HTLV-I was first isolated in 1980 from a patient originally thought to have a cutaneous lymphoma. It became clear that it was a distinct form of lymphoma, which was designated as acute T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma (ATL).

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma, T/null-cell, primary cutaneous lymphoma. This lymphoma involves the skin only. It is often indolent, although aggressive subtypes of the disease are possible.

It must be stressed that a dermatopathologist experienced in the diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas should review the biopsies to assure the correct diagnosis.

Follicular mucinosis occurring in the adult is associated, in perhaps 10-15% of cases, with the coexistence of a cutaneous lymphoma.

sometimes classified as either melanoma or nonmelanoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common nonmelanoma skin cancers. Other nonmelanoma skin cancers are Kaposi's sarcoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and cutaneous lymphoma.

is the name given to cancers that begin in cells that cover or line an organ.) Other skin cancers combined make up less than 1 percent of cases. These include Merkel cell carcinoma, adenexal tumors, various types of sarcomas, and cutaneous lymphomas.

In addition there are a number of other, less common cancers starting in the skin including Merkel cell tumors, cutaneous lymphomas, and sarcomas (see the pages on sarcoma and lymphoma in this guide).
