This test is used to tell the difference between methemoglobinemia caused by the lack of an enzyme in the blood called cytochrome b5 reductase and other types that are passed down through families (inherited).

Other types of methemoglobinemia can be caused by abnormal alpha-globin, a shortage of a particular enzyme called NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase, or unusual reactions to certain drugs or chemicals.
