Delayed Growth and Puberty in Children
Children who have sickle cell anemia often grow more slowly than other children. They may reach puberty later. A shortage of red blood cells causes the slow growth rate.

Delayed growth. Children with celiac disease do not absorb needed nutrients if they eat gluten. This may result in delayed growth if gluten is eaten regularly over a long period.

Thick sputum. It's easy for parents to overlook this symptom because infants and young children tend to swallow their sputum rather than cough it up.

Delayed Growth and Development in Children. Children with ulcerative colitis are at slightly higher than average risk for delayed growth, but their risk is lower than with Crohn's disease.

Anemia can cause shortness of breath, fatigue, and delayed growth and development in children. The rapid breakdown of red blood cells may also cause yellowing of the eyes and skin, which are signs of jaundice.

Undernutrition will result in delayed growth. It can also result in delayed intellectual development. An undernourished child tires easily, may have a short attention span, and can have a hard time learning.

Symptoms of celiac disease include weight loss, diarrhea, excessive gas, behavior changes, delayed growth (in children), failure to thrive (in infants), bone or joint pain, seizures, tingling numbness in the legs, tooth discoloration, and infertility.

People are born with a genetic predisposition to develop coeliac disease.

Call your health care provider if your child has delayed growth or if you notice any of the symptoms described here. Seek genetic counseling if there is a history of Aarskog syndrome in your family.

The treatment depends on the cause of the delayed growth and development. Delayed growth due to nutritional factors can be resolved by educating the parents to provide a well-balanced diet.
