Dermatomyositis

Disease DermatomegalyDermatophytosis

Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis are two forms of inflammatory myopathies - diseases of muscle caused by an immune response. They cause muscle weakness as their major symptom, and dermatomyositis also causes a skin rash.

What is Dermatomyositis?
Dermatomyositis is a systemic muscle disorder of unknown origin that causes muscle weakness and characteristic skin changes. Polymyositis causes a similar muscle weakness, but without the skin changes.

Dermatomyositis is one of a group of relatively uncommon diseases known as inflammatory myopathies, or inflammatory disorders of the muscles.

Dermatomyositis is a relatively rare disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. Because of similarities in signs, symptoms and treatment, it's often discussed in conjunction with polymyositis.

Dermatomyositis is characterized by immune complex deposition in the vessels and is considered a complement-mediated vasculopathy. In contrast, the main pathophysiologic abnormality in polymyositis is direct T cell-mediated muscle injury.

Juvenile dermatomyositis affects more children than adults.
The exact cause of JDM isn’t known, but problems with a child’s immune system are believed to be a factor.

Juvenile dermatomyositis is one of the conditions in a group of conditions called the dermatomyositis/polymyositis complex.

Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are twice as common in women as in men (with the exception of dermatomyositis with cancer, which is most common in men over age 40). Generally, the prognosis worsens with age.

DERMATOMYOSITIS & POLYMYOSITIS: Dermatomyositis is a rare, sometimes, deadly disease, in which the muscles and skin become inflamed, causing muscle weakness and rash. Polymyositis is a rare disease in which the muscles become weak and inflamed.

In dermatomyositis, cancer is found in approximately 10% to 20% of cases. Sometimes, the muscle problem develops first. In other cases, the cancer is detected before the myositis.
