A dermoid cyst is a pocket or cavity under the skin that contains tissues normally present in the outer layers of the skin.

A dermoid cyst is a slow-growing mass most often found on the scalp, face (usually beneath the eyebrow or near the bridge of the nose) or the neck.

For masses that appear benign on ultrasonography, histologic analysis is not required, and ultrasonography is repeated after 6 wk. Such benign-appearing masses include benign cystic teratomas (dermoid cysts), follicular cysts, or endometriomas.

Occasionally, the tissues of the ovary develop abnormally to form other body tissues such as hair or teeth. Cysts with these abnormal tissues are called benign cystic teratomas or dermoid cysts.

Some cysts are congenital, due to abnormal embryonic development; for example, dermoid cysts. Others are tumors containing cells that secret mucus or other substances, and in the body.
