Definition
Digitalis is a medication prescribed to certain heart patients. Digitalis toxicity is a complication of digitalis therapy, or it may be occur when someone takes more than a large amount of the drug at one time.

Digitalis toxicity can be caused by high levels of digitalis in the body, or a decreased tolerance to the drug. Patients with decreased tolerance may have "normal" digitalis levels in their blood.

When digitalis toxicity occurs, the drug should be stopped; electrolyte abnormalities should be corrected (IV if abnormalities are severe and toxicity is acute).

It can occur after a heart attack (myocardial infarction), after lung or heart surgery, or with digitalis toxicity. The abnormal conduction seen in WPW syndrome, however, may be present at birth (congenital).

Measure serum calcium every 4-6 hours to maintain serum calcium levels at 8-9 mg/dL.
Patients on digoxin therapy need continuous ECG monitoring during calcium replacement because calcium potentiates digitalis toxicity.
