Drain cleaners contain very dangerous chemicals that can be harmful to your health if swallowed or breathed in (inhaled). This article discusses poisoning from swallowing or breathing in drain cleaner.

Cleaning products - such as bleaches, washing machine and dishwashing powders, oven cleaners, drain cleaners, methylated spirits and turpentine.
Cosmetics - some creams, ointments, shampoos, hair dyes, perfumes and aftershaves.
Children who swallow lye products, such as drain cleaners, can develop esophageal stricture, or narrowing. A person may also be injured during an endoscopy, the examination of the esophagus and stomach with a lighted tube.
However, alkaline substances -- such as lime, lye, commercial drain cleaners, and sodium hydroxide found in refrigeration equipment -- may cause permanent damage to the cornea. Ongoing damage may occur in spite of prompt treatment.
Drain cleaners and oven cleaners are particularly dangerous. If chemicals are splashed in the eye, the eye should be IMMEDIATELY flushed with tap water for 15 minutes, and the patient should then be rushed to the nearest emergency facility.

Caustic esophageal injury usually occurs from accidental or deliberate ingestion of alkali (e.g., drain cleaners) or acid by children or adults.
Follow the instructions of the medical personnel precisely. Don't induce vomiting unless told to do so. Vomiting can cause further damage if lye, dishwashing detergents, drain cleaners, paint thinners, and certain other substances were swallowed.
Lye ingestion. Lye ingestion by children is associated with an increase in squamous cell carcinoma. Lye can be found in some cleansing products, such as drain cleaners.
