Dry skin is a common problem. Almost everyone has to deal with this problem during winter. However, many also suffer from dry skin conditions throughout the year.

 


Dry skin, at its worst, can be known as Dermatitis, Ichthyosis, or Eczema. Those topics are discussed elsewhere if appropriate. This topic is restricted to mild or moderate dryness.

Dry skin: Abnormally dry skin. Can be caused by a dry climate, winter weather, deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight, or medication. The skin loses moisture. It may crack and peel.

Dry skin can be uncomfortable, and it can also manifest in the form of scaly, reddened patches which some people find unsightly.

Dry skin is a feature of inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis and, in these cases, the doctor or the dermatologist may choose to treat the condition with a steroid cream that reduces inflammation.

Because dry skin may be a symptom of illness, you should seek advice from a healthcare provider. Your provider may do some tests or may refer you to a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in skin problems.

- Dry Skin: Dry skin needs extra care, as it is prone to fine lines and wrinkles. This is especially true during the winter months when it feels even drier and may feel too taut or may even flake.

Dry skin makes the itching and rash of atopic dermatitis, or eczema, worse. Wind, low humidity, soaps, some skin care products, and washing or bathing without proper moisturizing can cause dry skin.
Take at least one bath or shower per day.

DRY SKIN: About half of people with Sjogren's syndrome have dry skin. Some people only experience itching, but the itching can be severe. Scratching itchy skin can cause the skin to break open, leading to infection.

Avoid hot baths or showers; lukewarm water is best.

Moisturizers for dry skin come in three preparations: lotions, creams and ointments. Lotions are least effective at replacing and retaining lost moisture in very dry skin.

Dry skin (xerosis) is a condition of rough, dry skin with fine scaling of skin and, occasionally, with small cracks in the skin. Dry skin is also known as winter itch or asteatosis.
