Duane syndrome: A congenital eye movement disorder in which there is miswiring of the eye muscles, causing some eye muscles to contract when they should not and other eye muscles not to contract when they should.

Duane syndrome is a congenital, non-progressive disorder of eye movement first described by an American ophthalmologist, Alexander Duane, in 1905. It occurs most often as a sporadic, non-familial condition but is sometimes inherited.
