Duodenal ulcer symptoms
An ulcer in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer. The duodenum is located in the first 10 inches or so of the small intestine where it connects to the stomach.

A duodenal ulcer is usually caused by an infection with a bacterium (germ) called H. pylori. A 4-8 week course of acid-suppressing medication will allow the ulcer to heal.

Duodenal ulcer. An ulcer that develops in your small intestine is named for the section of the intestine where it develops. The most common is a duodenal ulcer, which develops in the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.

Duodenal ulcers are caused by an imbalance between acid and pepsin (an enzyme) secretion, and the defenses of the mucosal lining. A slight reduction in stomach acid may result in the overgrowth of H.

A duodenal ulcer is a raw area or open sore (ulcer) that develops when there is a break in the lining of the duodenum, the upper part of the small intestine which is connected to the stomach.

A duodenal ulcer happens when part of the lining of the intestine is eaten away by stomach acid and digestive juices. Normally, the lining of the intestine is protected from stomach acids.

Gastric and duodenal ulcers are defects in the lining of the stomach or duodenum that form when gastric acid overwhelms the normal protective mechanisms.

What is a stomach or duodenal ulcer?

A peptic ulcer of the stomach is called a gastric ulcer; of the duodenum, a duodenal ulcer; and of the esophagus, an esophageal ulcer.

A rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome causes stomach and duodenal ulcers. Persons with this disease have a tumor in the pancreas that releases high levels of a hormone, which causes an increase in stomach acid.

Duodenal ulcers tend to produce more consistent pain. Pain is absent when the patient awakens but appears in mid-morning, is relieved by food, but recurs 2 to 3 h after a meal.

Duodenal ulcers (peptic ulcers) are not associated with stomach cancer. However, infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori is associated with gastric cancer.

Duodenal ulcers are usually caused by a combination of factors - helicobacter pylori infection (see Index), acid production by the stomach, and impaired resistance of the duodenum to acid.
