Primary dysmenorrhea refers to menstrual pain that occurs in otherwise healthy women. This type of pain is not related to any specific problems with the uterus or other pelvic organs.
Secondary dysmenorrhea involves an underlying abnormal condition such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids that causes the menstrual cramps. This condition usually develops later, after you have begun menstruating.
For secondary dysmenorrhea, you'll need treatment for the underlying cause. Depending on that cause, treatment could include antibiotics to treat infection or surgery to remove fibroids or polyps or to treat endometriosis.
