What is dyspareunia?
Dyspareunia (say: "dis-par-oon-ya") is painful sexual intercourse for women. The pain can be in the genital area or deep inside the pelvis. The pain is often described as sharp, burning or similar to menstrual cramps.

Dyspareunia is pain in the vagina when the penis is inserted during sexual intercourse.
What is going on in the body?

Dyspareunia is considered to be primarily a physical, rather than an emotional, problem until proven otherwise. In most instances of dyspareunia, there is an original physical cause.

Dyspareunia typically is diagnosed based on your symptoms. Your medical and sexual history and your physical examination will help your doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms.

This is called 'collision dyspareunia'.
Womb trouble: various womb disorders, including fibroids, can cause deep intercourse pain.
Endometriosis: this very common disorder often affects the womb and surrounding tissues.
