Ectopic ACTH syndrome

Disease Ectopia cordisEctopic Cushing syndrome

ectopic ACTH syndrome
Type: Term
Definitions:
1. the association of Cushing syndrome with a non-pituitary neoplasm, usually a lung carcinoma that produces ACTH.

Ectopic ACTH syndrome
Primary adrenal hypersecretion
Cushing's Syndrome
Noncompliance with medication, diet, or activity restrictions ...

Ectopic ACTH syndrome is caused by lung tumors (usually carcinoid) in 50% of cases. Other ACTH-producing tumors include thymomas, pancreatic islet cell carcinomas, and medullary carcinomas of the thyroid.

ECTOPIC ACTH SYNDROME
In some people with ACTH-producing, non-pituitary tumors, surgical removal of the tumor eliminates the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome. These tumors are usually in the lung.

The CRH Stimulation test helps to distinguish between patients with pituitary adenomas and those with ectopic ACTH syndrome or cortisol-secreting adrenal tumors.

These tumors produce a form of Cushing's syndrome known as ectopic ACTH syndrome.
disorders of the adrenal glands
familial Cushing's syndrome, which involves tumors of one or more endocrine glands ...

Tumors of the adrenal gland and ectopic ACTH syndrome (a condition in which ACTH is produced by various types of potentially malignant tumors that occur in different parts of the body) can cause similar problems with cortisol balance.

More sophisticated testing may be needed in some cases when the pituitary tumor is so small that it cannot be seen by conventional imaging techniques. Very high levels of ACTH are associated with the ectopic ACTH syndrome.
