Electroretinography
Definition
Electroretinography is a test to measure the electrical response of the eye's light-sensitive cells, called rods and cones. These cells are part of the retina (the back part of the eye).

Electroretinography: Abbreviated ERG. A test in which the electrical potentials generated by the retina of the eye are measured when the retina is stimulated by light.

Electroretinography is a test to measure the electrical response of the eye's light-sensitive cells, called rods and cones.
Why is the Test Performed?

Electroretinography (ERG) is an eye test used to detect abnormal function of the retina (the light-detecting portion of the eye).

Electroretinography shows an absent or slower than normal retinal response time. Visual field testing (using a tangent screen) is used to detect ring scotoma.

Electroretinography: Electrodes are placed on each cornea and on the surrounding skin, and electrical activity in the retina is recorded. This technique evaluates retinal function in patients with retinal degeneration. It does not evaluate vision.

If any problems are found on these tests, an electroretinography (ERG) is done. This test confirms a diagnosis of RP. It measures the electricity given off by the nerves in the retina.

In cases where the diagnosis is unclear, a genetic analysis can be performed. A special test called electroretinography (ERG) can also be done to confirm the diagnosis.

It is also hard to distinguish what is vision and what is behavior in an infant or very young child. Therefore, electroretinography (ERG) testing is important in measuring if the child can see, and how much.
