Encephalitis is generally a viral illness. Viruses such as those responsible for causing cold sores, mumps, measles, and chickenpox can also cause encephalitis.

Encephalitis is an inflammation caused by a viral infection.

Encephalitis can also occur following infection by disease-carrying agents including ticks (Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever), mosquitos (West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis), and cats (toxoplasmosis and cat-scratch disease).
