Hypertensive end organ damage must be searched for when the diastolic BP is greater than 130 mm Hg and the patient exhibits confusion, dyspnea, restlessness, or blurred vision.
The prognosis depends on the degree of end organ damage such as pulmonary, urinary tract, bone, or prostate injury. Severe cases of exposure, either acute or chronic, can result in death.
If hypertension remains uncontrolled, it ultimately leads to end organ damage. Hence, uncontrolled hypertension is the major risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke - two important endpoints in the disease process.
