Endocarditis is a rare condition. In England, for example, endocarditis is estimated to affect fewer than 10 people in every 100,000 in any given year. You are more likely to develop endocarditis in the following cases.

Endocarditis is a relatively uncommon but potentially dangerous type of carditis (heart inflammation), usually caused by heart infection in vulnerable areas. The heart is a pump about the size of your fist.

Endocarditis Complications
As the bacteria or other germs multiply in your heart, they form clumps with other cells and matter found in the blood. These clumps are called vegetations (vej-eh-TA-shuns).

What are vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE)?

Fungal endocarditis
Fungal endocarditis is found in intravenous drug users and intensive care unit patients who receive broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Endocarditis causes vegetative matter to grow in the valves of the heart, generally the pulmonary and aortic valves. Endocarditis may also occur in the mitral and tricuspid valves, though this is less common.

Endocarditis is most likely to occur in people whose cardiac valves are vulnerable to infection.

Endocarditis is usually a result of a blood infection. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream during certain medical procedures, including dental procedures, and travel to the heart, where it can settle on damaged heart valves.

Endocarditis can occur at any age. Men are affected about twice as often. IV drug abusers and immunocompromised patients are at highest risk.

Not all endocarditis can be prevented. Call your doctor if you have symptoms of an infection (See box above). Do not wait a few days until you have a major infection to seek treatment. Colds and the flu do not cause endocarditis.

Bacterial endocarditis is an infection of the lining of the heart. This infection can occur in any person (infant, child, or adult) who has heart disease present at birth (congenital heart disease), or can occur in people without heart disease.

Bacterial endocarditis may occur in a person or any age who has congenital (present at birth) heart disease (CHD), or it may occur in people without heart disease.

Endocarditis. This infection of the heart's inner lining is one of the most serious complications of brucellosis. Untreated endocarditis can damage or destroy the heart valves and is the leading cause of brucellosis-related deaths.

Endocarditis - inflammation of the inner lining of the heart (endocardium).
Pericarditis - inflammation of the membrane that encloses the heart (pericardium).

Endocarditis
Brucellosis is also believed to cause a high rate of miscarriage during early pregnancy in infected women.
