The exact cause of enlarged adenoids is not always clear. Most studies point to chronic infection of the upper respiratory tract. Allergies may also cause the adenoids to enlarge. Adenoid enlargement is more common in children than adults.

Swollen or enlarged adenoids are common in children. Causes include:
Infections with viruses or bacteria. Once an infection clears, the swelling often goes down but sometimes the adenoids remain enlarged.
Allergies.
Often there is no apparent cause.

Chronically enlarged adenoids may cause blockage of the eustachian tubes, leading to congestion and fluid buildup in the middle ear.

In children, enlarged adenoids (tonsils in the back of the throat) are often the cause of the obstruction.

Surgical removal of enlarged adenoids may result in nasal escape, as the defect left by the removal of tissue is too great for palatal closure during phonation.

What are the symptoms of adenoiditis, or enlarged adenoids?
The symptoms of adenoiditis vary greatly depending on the cause of the infection, and can occur either suddenly or gradually. The following are the most common symptoms of adenoiditis.

Older children who may develop nasal congestion from enlarged adenoids may experience sleep apnea or heart failure, but with surgery, this problem can easily be corrected.

Adenoidectomy is usually done to remove enlarged adenoids that are causing a blockage in the nasal passage. It may also be used to treat long-term sinus infections and recurrent ear infections.

Benign growths (eg, enlarged adenoids, nasal polyps) and malignant tumors (eg, nasopharyngeal cancers, sinus cancers) blocking the eustachian tube or ear canal can be removed.

If children frequently suffer from ear inflammation caused by enlarged adenoids or tonsils, they may be removed surgically.

Enlarged adenoids can, because of their size, interfere with the eustachian tube opening. In addition, adenoids may themselves become infected, and the infection may spread into the eustachian tubes.

Allergies can cause enlargement of your adenoids (tonsil-like tissue at the back of your nose, where the nose joins the upper throat). Enlarged adenoids can cause snoring by blocking your airway and vibrating while you breathe.

Snoring may indicate some obstruction to nasal breathing such as enlarged adenoids; this is especially true in children. In some individuals it is merely a poor breathing habit and usually disappears when the person lies on his side.

Allergens (substances that trigger an allergic reaction) can sometimes irritate the adenoids, making them swell up.
