Enteroceles and rectoceles are detected by retracting the anterior vaginal wall while patients are in the lithotomy position. Asking patients to strain can make enteroceles and rectoceles visible and palpable during rectovaginal examination.

Rectocele and enterocele often occur with other pelvic organ prolapse, so tell your doctor about other symptoms you may be having.

An enterocele occurs when muscles and tissues that hold the small bowel in place inside the pelvic cavity weaken, causing the small bowel to drop and press into the vaginal wall....

In addition, enterocele may be associated with prolapse of the uterus (the uterus pushes down into the vagina).

Vaginal vault prolapse and herniated small bowel (Enterocele). Vaginal vault prolapse and herniated small bowel often occur high in the vagina, so surgery to correct the problems may be done through the vagina or the abdomen.
