Enuresis: Involuntary urination, which may be caused by a variety of factors. These include disorders of the kidneys, bladder, or ureter; and poor control of the muscles that control release of urine.

In diurnal enuresis, dysfunctional voiding is suggested by intermittent enuresis preceded by a sense of urgency, a history of being distracted by play, or a combination.

Enuresis
Causes
Children develop complete control over their bladders at different ages. Nighttime dryness is usually the last stage of toilet learning.

Enuresis
Considerations
Bed wetting is divided into two categories. Primary nocturnal (nighttime) urinary incontinence is when a child has never achieved full bladder control (never been fully toilet trained).

Enuresis is not caused by emotional problems, says Dr. Amstutz, however they can be created if the situation is mishandled. "Bed-wetting causes guilt and embarrassment in most children.

Bedwetting, called enuresis, is the involuntary discharge of urine during sleep. Bedweting affects 15-20% of 5-year olds, 7% of 7-year olds and 1-2% of adolescents and adults. Boys are twice as often affected than girls.

Bed-wetting (also called enuresis) is common, and it is more common among boys than girls. It is frustrating for both parent and child and can lead to a loss of self-esteem.

In general, bed wetting, also called nocturnal enuresis, is considered normal in children up to the age of six or seven.

Most children, especially those younger than seven years old, experience nighttime incontinence, also called bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis.

They almost always occur in slow-wave sleep and may include sleepwalking, sleeptalking, night terrors, confusional arousals, and nocturnal enuresis. Para- somnias are strongly associated with genetics and usually present in many family members.

Children who've never been dry at night are considered to have primary enuresis. Children who begin to wet the bed after at least six months of dry nights are considered to have secondary enuresis.
