In a few rare cases, contaminants in 5-HTP were associated with a potentially fatal condition called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome.

Several hundred patients were reported to have developed an eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome after taking l-tryptophan for sedation or psychotropic support. This syndrome was probably caused by a contaminant rather than by l-tryptophan.

Occasionally, the onset of eosinophilic fasciitis follows a period of exertional physical activity. Eosinophilic fasciitis is sometimes confused with eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome and scleroderma.

In the late 1980s, tryptophan supplements were linked to an outbreak of a serious bacterial autoimmune disorder, eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. This disease was deadly, and as a result, tryptophan supplements were pulled from the US market.

L-tryptophan supplements have caused eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in some people.
