Viral epidemic encephalitis marked by apathy, paralysis of the extrinsic eye muscle, and extreme muscular weakness. It occurred in various parts of the world between 1915 and 1926. Also called sleeping sickness, sleepy sickness. [Heritage].

 


ENCEPHALITIS, EPIDEMIC Encephalitis causes a serious inflammation of the brain tissue. In the epidemic type, sometimes called sleeping sickness. The causative agent is probably a virus.

Viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks (arboviruses) are the most common cause of epidemic encephalitis. In recent years, these viruses have also produced the most publicized cases of encephalitis.

It can happen to people at any time of the year (sporadic encephalitis), or it can be part of an outbreak (epidemic encephalitis).
Secondary (post-infectious) encephalitis.

In the United States, the most common cause of sporadic encephalitis is the herpes simplex virus. Epidemic encephalitis are usually mosquito - or tick-borne, which may be dependant on the geography and season.
