Eye emergencies include cuts, scratches, objects in the eye, burns, chemical exposure, and blunt injuries to the eye or eyelid.

Incidence and Prevalence: Eye burns are one of the most common eye emergencies worldwide, and represent 7% to 18% of eye trauma seen at emergency departments in the US (Melsaether).

Acute glaucoma -- a sudden increase in eye pressure that is extremely painful and causes serious visual disturbances. This is a medical emergency. Most times, glaucoma is chronic and gradual.
