It runs in families and is also referred to as familial tremor.

Essential tremor, sometimes called benign (non-cancerous) or familial tremor, is an uncontrollable shaking, most often in the hands and forearms. You might notice this tremor when your arms are reaching out in front of your body.

For example, tremor is a hallmark finding in essential familial tremor, a disorder that is not well understood but tends to develop in adolescence and may have a hereditary tendency.

The cause of ET is unknown. However, it does run in families. When inherited, it is often called familial tremor. Children of parents with ET have a 50% chance of inheriting the condition.

When there is a family history of a similar tremor, the condition is called familial tremor. The trembling can get worse with the following:
stress, or emotion
hunger
fatigue
caffeine
temperature extremes ...

Each child of a person with essential tremor has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting the disorder themselves. If a person with essential tremor has other affected family members, then the disorder is called 'familial tremor'.
