A fecal impaction is a large mass of dry, hard stool that can develop in the rectum due to chronic constipation. This mass may be so hard that it cannot come out of the body.

Fecal impaction occurs in elderly or bedridden persons who are constipated over a long period of time. Rectal disorders such as painful hemorrhoids can also cause fecal impaction.

Fecal impaction - When hardened feces accumulates in the rectum, this can cause the anal sphincters to relax and allow liquid stool to escape around the blockage. Fecal impaction is a common cause of incontinence in older adults.

If a diagnosis of fecal impaction is uncertain, a laboratory workup can rule out other problems. A complete blood cell count, appropriate blood chemistries, chest x-ray, and an electrocardiogram can be performed.

In older individuals or in the bedridden, feces can become hardened into a solid mass and obstruct the bowel (fecal impaction).

Constipation is annoying and uncomfortable, but fecal impaction (a collection of dry, hard stool in the colon or rectum) can be life-threatening. Patients with a fecal impaction may not have gastrointestinalsymptoms.

This condition, known as impacted stool or fecal impaction, occurs most often in the elderly or nursing home populations.

Very severe or chronic constipation can sometimes cause a fecal impaction, a mass of hardened stool that you can't eliminate by a normal bowel movement. An impaction can be dangerous, and you may need to have it manually removed.

If the blockage is just a hard lump of stool near the anus (fecal impaction), your provider may be able to remove it with an enema or a gloved finger. This usually requires several enemas and may be very uncomfortable.

This condition, called fecal impaction, occurs most often in children and older adults. An impaction can be softened with mineral oil taken by mouth and by an enema.

This pattern commonly occurs as part of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). At the extreme end of the constipation spectrum is fecal impaction, a condition in which stool hardens in the rectum and prevents the passage of any stool.

Abdominal distention is common from either ileus or constipation; megacolon and fecal impaction can occur.
Heart sounds are frequently distant due to pericardial effusion +++. Congestive heart failure is also frequent.

Incontinence of stool or fecal soiling is most often due to leakage around a fecal impaction. Removing the impaction will usually restore continence.
Incontinence of stool in healthy older people deserves full education and treatment.
