Definition
Femoral hernia repair is surgery to repair a hernia near the groin or upper thigh. A femoral hernia is tissue that bulges out of a weak spot in the groin. Usually this tissue is part of the intestine.

A hernia is caused by the protrusion of a viscus through a weakness in the containing wall. This weakness may be inherent, as in the case of inguinal, femoral and umbilical hernias.

Femoral hernias
Femoral hernias are rare, and mostly seen in middle-aged and elderly obese women who have given birth several times.
The hernia is seen as a lump below the inguinal ligament.
The treatment is surgery.

Femoral hernia - bowel enters the femoral canal presenting as a mass in the upper, inner thigh.
Umbilical - through umbilicus (the belly button area).
Paraumbilical - just above or below the umbilicus.

Femoral hernias are more common in women.
Umbilical - a portion of the gut pushes through a muscular weakness near the navel, or belly button. This type of hernia is more common in newborns.

Inguinal hernias and femoral hernias are both groin hernias, and they occur in the area between the lower abdomen and the thigh. Umbilical hernias occur directly beneath or near the navel.

Groin hernias include inguinal hernias and femoral hernias. Inguinal hernias occur above the inguinal ligament.
