A fenestration is an opening or window. For example, one surgical treatment for hearing problems is to make an artificial opening, or a fenestration, in a certain part of the ear.

Definition
A myringotomy is an incision in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) that is often necessary to relieve pressure caused by fluid buildup in the internal, air-filled cavity (middle ear) beyond the eardrum.
The surgical treatments currently used are optic nerve sheath fenestration (making slits in the optic nerve sheath or covering) and lumbar shunting procedures (running a tube from the spinal fluid space in the lower spine into the abdominal cavity).

One procedure — called optic nerve sheath fenestration — cuts a window into the membrane that surrounds the optic nerve. This allows excess cerebrospinal fluid to escape. Vision stabilizes or improves in more than 85 percent of cases.
A procedure called optic nerve sheath fenestration can be carried out. Small cuts are made in the protective sheath around the optic nerve. This allows CSF to escape and the pressure on the optic nerve is reduced.
Surgical approaches include fenestration with removal of the bulk tumor, which is usually followed by radiation therapy or block resection of the upper jaw.

Ankylosing spondilitis, aortic cusp fenestration, Marfan's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosis and aortitis.
Such circular or oval windows express the presence of a mezzanine on a building's façade without competing for attention with the major fenestration.
